Rapid Palatal Expander

By on 9-21-2011 in Appliance

Rapid Palatal Expander, also known as RPE, is an orthodontic applaince that widens the transverse dimension of the maxilla, by separating the midpalatal suture, or by buccal tipping of the maxillary posterior teeth. This subsequently allows for the creation of more space for the eruption of the permanent teeth. A permanent increase in maxillary transverse width is attained routinely in your orthodontic patients with this treatment followed by retention. It does not normally cause any problem. The procedure for RPE is still controversial and a variety of modifications have been described since its introduction.
